The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has come forth with the announcement that biometric verification will become a requirement for all grant beneficiaries, thus putting at stake the payments of millions of social grants if the new condition is not satisfied. The whole process is a part of SASSA’s plans to increase security measures, eliminate fraud and guarantee that payments are made only to rightful recipients. From the day when the system is implemented, those beneficiaries who do not complete the verification through biometrics may undergo delays or even suspensions in their payments.
Reasons For SASSA To Implement Biometric Verification
Biometric verification is a method that employs unique physical characteristics like fingerprints or facial recognition to verify a person’s identity. SASSA has decided to use this technology to deal with identity fraud, multiple claims, and unauthorized access to grant payments. It is said that the agency plans to enhance accountability and safeguard public funds by making the connection between the biometric data of each beneficiary and their grant record direct while at the same time facilitating the support of the true beneficiaries.
Whom The New Norm Will Touch
The biometric verification regulation is extended to all SASSA grant types comprising Older Persons Grant, Disability Grant, Child Support Grant, Foster Child Grant and Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant. The requirement will be imposed on both the current beneficiaries and the new applicants. The beneficiaries who are going to change their banking details, contact information or personal records will also need to go through the biometric verification as part of the update process.
How The Biometric Verification Process Works
Biometric data of the beneficiaries has to be taken at a SASSA office or a registered approved point. The very common way to do this is through scanning the fingerprints or the whole face which is then linked to a valid South African ID. The captured biometric data is incorporated into the official SASSA profile of the beneficiary and it is utilized for identity verification before the payments are disbursed.
What Happens If Verification Is Not Completed
SASSA has given a warning to the beneficiaries that biometric verification not completed by them can lead to the temporary suspension of their grant payments. The payments will only be restarted after the biometric verification has been done successfully. Hence it is very important for the beneficiaries to act quickly, particularly those dependent on grants as their only source of income.
What Beneficiaries Should Do Now
It is essential for the grant beneficiaries to be very active and get their ID documents ready and make sure that their personal data are the same as that in the SASSA records. They need to go to the closest SASSA office immediately in order to escape long lines and delays at the last moment. Moreover, being in touch through the SASSA official communication channels will be a great help for the beneficiaries to be informed about the timelines and the needed documents.
